Smoothies are an excellent, healthy way to start the day. Just be sure to make your own smoothies, so you know exactly what’s in them. Some of the smoothie mixes you can buy or smoothies you get at restaurants and snack bars are high in fat, calories and artificial ingredients — not very nutritious at all.
This strawberry smoothie recipe is not only delicious, it is jam-packed with nutrition, too. It offers a whopping 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein per serving, not to mention 153% of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C.
And with just 3 mg. of cholesterol per serving, these smoothies make a great heart-healthy breakfast or snack, too. And the kids will just love them.
This strawberries and cream smoothie recipe calls for frozen strawberries. That makes these smoothies taste frosty, more like a strawberry milkshake or a frozen drink than a juice.
However, frozen strawberries can be hard to puree in a regular blender. The Vita Mix blender is an excellent (though pricey) choice for the job and well worth the investment if you plan to make smoothies often. The Vita-Mix is a restaurant quality blender that can also be used as a food processor for pureeing soups, nut butters, salsas, etc.
If you don’t have a Vita-Mix, use a food processor or thaw the strawberries. However, if you thaw the strawberries, the smoothie will taste more like strawberry milk than a real frozen smoothie.
Serve these strawberries and cream smoothies with strawberry scones or Cheerios breakfast cookies for a healthy, nutrition-packed breakfast the kids will love.
